JUNE 2021 Writing Update #1: Writing Days of Infinite Sunshine

JUNE 2021 Writing Update #1: Writing Days of Infinite Sunshine

Peace is the way to live. Violence is only a way to survive.

— quote from The Waves of Him (The Sea of Her #2)

June is here, marking the start of summer — and it really, truly does.

The weather has been amazing here in the Netherlands for the past few days, filled with sunshine and infinite blue skies. No more long sleeves, no more endless layers of clothes. We’re going summer style.

And, in case you didn’t know, I happen to LOVE summer. It’s by far my favorite season, simply because everything feels more alive. The vibrant colors of nature give me such inspiration for my stories, and the warm temperature fills me with energy; I swear it makes me write even faster than usual. (Really. It does.)

Except during a heatwave, maybe. However, on the other hand, I’ve also been binge-writing during several of them over the past few years 😉

So, now over to the actual “writing” in this Writing Update! The last couple of weeks have been quite busy for me, and even more bookish action is coming my — and your — way this month.

A new book has been finished.
Others have been edited.
Another one is being born.
And some are about to spread their wings and fly off into the wide world of the reading community…

You ready?

• Diving into the tragic past of the Insomnia Saga

If you’ve been following me on social media lately, you’ve probably already seen this — however, I’d still like to mention that a couple of weeks ago I finished working on the manuscript of The Origins Files. It is a short story collection that is a sequel to The Nocturne Files (Insomnia Saga 2.5), yet is also deeply connected to ORIGINS (Insomnia Saga 3).

As ORIGINS has only released in ebook and paperback last week, I cannot say too much, except that several new subjects on the dark past of Alain Somnus and the Night Angel Cult have been touched upon in the book, and I’ve turned those side-storylines in a detailed short story and novella that make up The Origins Files.

It was really fun and interesting to work on this, but also rather sad at some points, as I dug deeper in Orion’s and Nilisa’s past and relationship… and if you’ve read The Nocturne Files, you can probably guess it’s all pretty tragic, to say the least. I don’t think I’ve ever written such a complicated, messy love story before!

I’ve already picked a release date for the book, so I’ll let you guys know ASAP 🙂

• The Sea of Her: editing, publication & writing update

Last month I revealed my brand-new Paranormal Romance series, entitled The Sea of Her, and announced the release for book 1 (June 22nd) and book 2 (August 24th)… which means the series will start releasing THIS MONTH!!

In case you haven’t noticed yet, I’m totally excited.

😀

Yes. So. Currently the preparations are in full swing. I finished editing the first book last week and am currently working my way through the final revisions on book 2, The Waves of Him. Usually I am not a huge fan of revisions, but I’m actually having lots of fun with these!

Meanwhile, I am already working on book 3 in the series, which I’ll probably officially announce later this summer. The rough overall plot outline for the entire book is done, and earlier this week I even finished the detailed plot outline for the first half of the novel. I’ve begun writing the first couple of chapters yesterday, and will work some more on it as I wrap up the revisions on book 2 this week 🙂

And next week, and probably the week after, me and my sis/awesome book designer will join forces again to turn the manuscripts into actual books! I can’t wait to see the ebook editions — and I’m even more excited for the paperbacks. What will they look like? What kind of interior design will they get? Even I don’t know yet! (THE SUSPENSE IS KILLING ME.)

So, that’ll be June — and after all that work is done, I’m going to slow down for a couple of months as I’ll be taking my annual summer break~ I am pretty sure there will still be a lot of writing going on, and of course, I’ll keep up my presence on social media and will stay in touch with my ARC team and other readers (uhm, when exactly will this become a holiday??), but… whenever I feel like taking a day or several days off to just read or play a video game or do whatever, I simply can without having to feel guilty 😉 (We all know THAT feeling, right?)

Also, a quick Covid-update; the vaccinations here in the Netherlands are finally progressing a lot faster, and I think I might be able to get mine this month. I just hope it’ll be after I’m done with all my work, because everyone seems to end up feeling terribly tired after getting their shot. We’ll see. Well, now that I think about it, it doesn’t really matter that much. I’ll make it work anyway. After all, your health is way more important than deadlines, right?

This is it for now! This’ll be my last blog post for the next few weeks, as I’m going to be really busy, but of course I’ll still be around on social media <3

I hope you guys are all doing well and are in good health! Please feel free to leave a message here down below; I always love reading them 🙂

(Also, I went for a long walk yesterday, and if you’d like to see some pretty pictures of trees and flowers and even more trees, head on over to my Instagram!)

MARCH 2021 Writing Update #1: Diving Deep into a New World

MARCH 2021 Writing Update #1: Diving Deep into a New World

“It is instinct,” Keanu suddenly says, and Leilani looks up slowly. He doesn’t meet her eye. “A life is still a life, an existence, no matter how dark it may be. Even a bad life can be hard to give up on. Because your heart is always insistent on beating on, your lungs on drawing breath. It is instinct,” he repeats, finally lifting his gaze, “to stay alive. And hope for something better.”

— quote from The Project That Shall Not Be Revealed… yet —

Yes. You’re reading this right. No. You’re not seeing things that aren’t there.

This is a quote from the first book of the brand new series I am now working on — it is real, it is there; a new book series is coming! 😀

If you haven’t figured it out yet, I am very HAPPY and very RELIEVED.

I’ll tell you some more in this update. Let’s dive in!

• The Project That Shall Not Be Revealed… yet

In February’s Writing Update I told you how I was still struggling with the concept for a new book series. I kept on changing my mind, I kept on starting over on the plot outline again and again. I couldn’t decide on anything and none of the angles I came up with felt like the “right one”.

A few days after that update, I actually decided to give up on the project, because it simply drove me insane… and I just had to be honest with myself and admit that now obviously wasn’t the time to work on this story. So, I turned to another project that had been on my mind since 2019 and decided to work on that instead.

To be honest, I felt a bit reluctant at first. Attempting and failing to write the other series had left me feeling a little bit insecure (I was seriously worried I had somehow lost my touch over the Christmas holidays, or something), but as soon as I sat down and began taking notes for my ideas, it all just began to flow.

I’ve been pretty quiet about it, though, because I was still scared I’d change my mind any moment and decide to quit and move on to yet another project. BUT! Luckily, that is not the case, and this new project is slowly stealing my heart as I’m getting to know my new characters…; they’re so fascinating, I just want to find out more about them!!

So, yes, this new project is the real thing, and I enjoy working on it so much~

However, at this point, I still can’t reveal too much — except that the main characters are called Leilani and Keanu (as you’ve probably noticed in the quote I shared above!)… and that it’ll be an ocean/sea themed series with a fantasy and — of course — highly romantic twist 😀

And that is all I’m going to say before I get too excited and spill too much~ (CONTROL YOURSELF, WRITER!)

[By the way, I have been getting new ideas for the series I had to give up on! I’m so glad, because it felt like such a shame to quit. Hopefully, in the near future, I’ll be able to write the story after all…)

• Editing ORIGINS part 1

The revisions on ORIGINS part 1 (to be released March 25th in eBook edition) are in full swing here, and I’m enjoying it so much!! Sometimes I tend to forget editing can actually be fun, instead of just tiring. I don’t know why, though.

However, it’s great to connect with Jodi and Kay again. Reading about them in book 3 gives me so many feels (their relationship is so complex, I’m both frustrated and in love with those two~) and really makes me want to write the fourth and final book. The plan is to at least start working on it this year. It’s going to be so intense… 😉

That is it for now, guys! I’m so glad to be back in my usual writing flow, and I’m really happy to be able to share that with you all in this first Writing Update of March 2021 ♥️ I’m really excited for the upcoming months, and I’ll keep you all posted on the new book series! I’m planning to reveal some more after April, when the final book in the Kissing Monsters series is released… Stay tuned!

NOVEMBER 2020 Writing Update #1: The Secrets of November

NOVEMBER 2020 Writing Update #1: The Secrets of November

Dear Monster Kissers,

After leaving October behind, we’re already rushing through the first weeks of November. I don’t know what it’s like where you live, but here in the Netherlands November has gone off on a great start — every day has been peaceful and sunny, the trees are taking on every possible shade of yellow, orange, red and brown. It’s the perfect autumn weather, which this year I am enjoying from inside my home.

From where I’m sitting, on the couch in the living room where I write all of my books, I have a view on a few pine trees, and every day when the sun sets they somehow take on this reddish, almost pink shade; it’s really mesmerizing to look at and one of those small things that inspires me for my stories 🙂

Now then, speaking of writing…

• Writing: KISSING SECRETS

Back in October I wrote the plot outline for the seventh book of the Kissing Monsters series, entitled KISSING SECRETS. I began working on the manuscript, but was then forced to take a break for a couple of weeks to prepare The Nocturne Files (Insomnia Saga 2.5) for its October 27th ebook & paperback release, as well as Kissing Monsters book 4’s November 17 publication.

At the start of November, however, I could finally return to the manuscript… and I was so full of energy and inspiration that I finished it in a week! Especially the ending was incredibly intense to write. I won’t give away any spoilers (there are still 3 books between this one and the last one that has been released in September), but let’s just say that a lot of twists and turns are awaiting you and that Kiss and Zane have a lot of obstacles to overcome, the poor souls~ But hey, that’s not entirely MY fault! I mean, bad things need to happen to your protagonists in order to make it an interesting story, right?

Right…?

(Sometimes I worry my characters will somehow come alive and start haunting me at night, or something. Yikes.)

• Aaaand on to… Writing: KISSING PASSION

Because why stop the flow when it’s going so great? As I was finishing up book 7, ideas for book 8 were already growing and shaping themselves into part of a plot outline. Last weekend I spent brainstorming and taking notes whenever a new idea hit me while reading a book and playing a video game (not both at once, naturally 😛 ), and since Monday I’ve been working hard at writing the actual outline for the book, by first looking at how many chapters I’d need and what would happen in which.

And so, I finished the detailed plot outline this afternoon! I’m so happy with it and look forward to tomorrow, when I’ll start on the first couple of chapters (the prologue will be rather short, so I’m sure I’ll be working on Chapter One soon enough). Looking at the fact that book 8 will be the final conclusion to this story, it’s going to be an emotional experience writing it. The plot outline already promises me loads of epic moments and, of course, drama. I don’t like drama in real life — but BOY OH BOY, do I love it in a book 😀

This concludes November’s first writing update! Next to writing my socks off, I’m also in the middle of editing books 5 and 6 of the Kissing Monsters series to prepare them for their 2020/2021 releases… while occasionally being blown away by the fact that the Kissing Monsters books are receiving more and more 4 and 5-starred reviews that just simply amaze me. I really couldn’t be happier ♥️

Oh, also — now that Halloween is behind us, I can finally fully give in to my Christmas obsession and start looking forward to the holiday season! Since 2020 has proven to be the weirdest year ever, my family and I decided we’re bringing the festivities into our home a bit earlier than usual, meaning we’ll start decorating the house in less than two weeks!! I’m really looking forward to it 😀

Do you like Christmas?

Wishing you all a great day~!

OCTOBER 2020 Writing Update #2: My Bookish Life of Nocturnal Monsters

OCTOBER 2020 Writing Update #2: My Bookish Life of Nocturnal Monsters

Zane’s breaths quicken as he finds the angel standing across from him, his dark face eerily lit, his eyes  turned into empty white orbs that appear to stare right through him.

“Inside this ring of fire,” he whispers, “I will see all of you.”

— KISSING SECRETS (Kissing Monsters 7) —

Hi there, Monster Kissers! 🧡

We’re already halfway October; can you believe it? Halloween is crawling closer, days are growing shorter, and temperatures are dropping — already it’s the time of year to curl up on the couch at night wrapped in a blanket! Although I love lazy summer days and don’t mind warmer temperatures, I have been looking forward to these times and am enjoying it 😉

Time for a quick update to catch you up on the last couple of weeks’ developments!

• Behind the scenes: turning manuscripts into actual books!

For the past week and a half I have been working with my awesome designer Kimberly Jolanda (who also happens to do my book covers… and to be my sister!) on turning several of my manuscripts into actual books, preparing them for their October, November and December releases.

We’ve been working super hard — and fast! The work flow has been amazing and it was lots of fun 😀 Only after two days, we’d already finished the ebook and paperback edition of The Nocturne Files, which is book 2.5 in the Insomnia Saga and will release on October 27th.

After that, we powered through and made the ebook of KISSING GHOSTS (Kissing Monsters 4, which will release on November 17th) and spent several days working on the very first Kissing Monsters Collection; a paperback that will include books 1 to 4. It’s planned to be released in December; I’ll do an official release date announcement next month in November 🙂

It was so amazing to see the Kissing Monsters books come to life in a “real” book! Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love ebooks and don’t think less of them, but to be able to hold a physical copy of your own book in your hands, to see the words printed on paper instead of on a computer screen or on your ereader… that’s just pure magic ❤️❤️

• Daily life; crazy world

Although I am really enjoying life at the moment and feeling very optimistic, in the outside world things are being less… great. While it almost feels like everything is going on as normal as everyone seems to pretend it is, the pandemic is still a thing and the virus is still haunting our world.

The same goes for my country, the Netherlands. The number of cases of infected rises every single day with dizzying speed. Last I’ve heard, we’re already on 8.700 a day — which is very alarming, looking at the fact that it’s practically the smallest country on earth.

For this reason, last week we went into a “partial lockdown”. And I don’t want to come across as negative or hysterical, but I’m kind of expecting we’ll be going into full lockdown pretty soon, because at this point, it hasn’t stopped the increase in victims at all.

In all honesty, it won’t make much of a difference to me. I’ve been living in preventive quarantine since March. I haven’t gone out to the cinema or a museum even once; I don’t even go out for walks or runs, which I miss the most of all, but I just don’t believe the risk is worth it. My family’s and my own health is too important; and hey, now that the holiday season is near, it’s actually kind of cozy to be inside all the time 😉

All right, this is it for now! While staying indoors, I’m working hard on future book releases and there are many more to come! 😀 As I’m about to finish up the release preparations in the following days, I can go back to my writing next week. I’m glad for it; not being able to write for a while tends to make me feel all fidgety and even slightly agitated — no matter how much I enjoy the process of designing ebooks and paperbacks! I’ve already made a schedule for November; I’ll be doing some editing, but I’ve also planned a couple of weeks in which I can write full-time on KISSING SECRETS, book 7 of the Kissing Monsters series.

And then, December: as it’s holiday month, I’ve decided to treat myself to an entire month of full-time writing, as I won’t have to edit a thing! Already looking forward to it~ ❤️
