MAY 2020 Writing Update: the ORIGINS of awesome writing

MAY 2020 Writing Update: the ORIGINS of awesome writing

Okay, first of all โ€” I’d like to apologize for the slightly lame title of this post x”D I thought it was pretty witty, actually, looking at the fact that I wrote my book, ORIGINS, this month… and working on it had been awesome, so…

Yeah. Well.

Let’s move on and dive right into May’s writing update! For me it has been a month of success and inspiration, and I’d love to tell you guys more about it! ๐Ÿ˜€ Let’s go:

โ€ข ORIGINS: the manuscript is finished!

Yes, you read that right! In April’s writing update I already told you guys I wanted to finish writing ORIGINS (Insomnia Saga 3) in May… and well, if you’ve been following me for a while, you probably know I usually always complete the tasks I set for myself ๐Ÿ˜‰

I finished writing ORIGINS during the second week of May. I’d been writing like a maniac for days straight; I just kept on going, finishing one chapter after another, because I had to finish this book…

And then, suddenly, I’d written the book’s epilogue. And that was that.

It felt awesome, though I must admit it was also slightly anticlimactic โ€” first I’d wanted nothing more but to finish the manuscript (because I have SO MANY other ideas crowding this brain of mine), but the moment I was done, I honestly was a bit disappointed that the journey had come to an end.

Because writing ORIGINS certainly was one hell of a journey; of course, I’ve put my heart and soul into every installment of the Insomnia Saga, but this being the latest book I’ve worked on causes me to be a bit overly “attached” to it, so to speak ๐Ÿ˜‰ I absolutely loved the process, especially because it went so smoothly. The characters felt truly alive to me and every idea I had for this book just seemed to fit in with the plot perfectly.

I managed to put every scene that was in my head for this book into the manuscript โ€” I just LOVE that โค๏ธ

ORIGINS was written in 6 weeks and 1 day! (yes, I checked)

I actually can’t wait to share ORIGINS with you โ€” but… book 2 still needs to be published x”D The wait is nearly over, though; NOCTURNE (Insomnia Saga 2) will be released in ebook and paperback next month!

Now I’ve got several spin-offs left to write for the Insomnia Saga, and I hope to begin working on book 4, SOMNUS, by the end of this year ๐Ÿ™‚

โ€ข NOCTURNE official coming soon trailer

Speaking of NOCTURNE…

For those of you who haven’t seen it yet, I’d like to share NOCTURNE’s official coming soon trailer that went online last week! Personally, I’m totally fangirling over the spookiness of it~

NOCTURNE releases in ebook and paperback on June 23rd!

As I said before, the wait is almost over! I hope you guys are just as excited as I am ๐Ÿ˜‰

If you’re curious, I’m sharing some quotes of NOCTURNE on my Instagram feed, so go ahead and check it out!

BEHIND THE SCENES SEP 2018 - Brainstorming

โ€ข Brainstorming madness

After I finished writing ORIGINS, I actually thought I was supposed to take a break off writing or something. I don’t know why, but for some reason I expected myself to take it easy for a bit.

My brain works in mysterious ways.

However, literally a few hours after I finished ORIGINS, I already realized I just didn’t want to stop writing, I didn’t need a break: I wanted to go on.

So that’s exactly what I did; I began working on plot outlines for several projects that have been living in my mind for a while now, and I’m not sure what is going on in that head of mine these days, but it’s like I’m unstoppable.

Within a week, I wrote the complete plot outlines for the stories included in the Insomnia Saga short story collection, The Origins Files (Insomnia Saga 3.5), and for the third installment to the Kissing Monsters series, which is entitled KISSING SCARLET.

After I’d finished those, I began working on the plot outline for another book, which will be the first installment to yet another series! I’m not able yet to tell you guys everything, except that it’s going to be a series of stand alone installments of dark, romantic fantasy stories โค๏ธ I’m very excited about this project, so I hope I’ll be able to share more soon! I’m currently really enjoying the plot outline/brainstorming process. It’s going very well, and I expect to have it finished by the end of this afternoon, as a matter of fact ๐Ÿ™‚

The “problem” I have with writing all these plot outlines, however, is that every time I finish one, my hands are itching to start writing the actual manuscripts x”D I don’t, though, because writing all of these plot outlines first is part of my amazing-summer-writing plan (wait for it, here it comes):

In two weeks’ time, I’ll be joining my designer to make NOCTURNE‘s ebook, paperback and book trailer. After that, there will be one or two weeks left of June, and in July/August I’m taking a bit of a summer break, as I do every year, in which I allow myself to do some other stuff besides writing (like reading and playing video games~). However, I’m so full of inspiration these days, that I don’t really want to stop, so I’m working ahead now by finishing all of those plot outlines, so I can just sit down during my summer break and start writing, without having to think through and solve plot-issues.

That’s like the summer-holiday version of writing, right? Next to that, I won’t have to edit a single manuscript in July and August, so I can focus entirely on my favorite part: simply writing my books โค๏ธ

Sounds pretty neat, huh?

All right, I suppose this wraps up May pretty nicely! I’ve done a lot of writing, as usual, and am thoroughly enjoying the process ๐Ÿ˜€ I’m also currently editing NOCTURNE in the mornings โ€” it’s the final round of revisions before we’re going to turn it into an actual book! I can’t wait to hold it in my hands~

Oh, right โ€” did you see last week’s special blog post on my 5 Tips & Tricks for a high-productivity-healthy-indoors-lifestyle? If not and you’re interested, please check it out! I’m sharing my own favorite tricks for getting the most out of each day while in quarantine, so maybe you get something out of it as well ๐Ÿ™‚ It’s an article full of inspiration, chasing dreams, fitness, yoga, meditation and even tai chi!

Next month will be NOCTURNE‘s release month, so expect loads of awesomeness coming your way! I hope to see you there ๐Ÿ˜‰

As always, thanks so much for reading! If you’ve got any questions or just like to say hi, feel free to drop me a line in the comments section below! โค๏ธ

5 Tips & Tricks for a high-productivity-healthy-indoors-lifestyle from a YA Fantasy Romance Author

5 Tips & Tricks for a high-productivity-healthy-indoors-lifestyle from a YA Fantasy Romance Author

Hey there!

Last month I posted April’s Writing Update, in which I told you about the changes and improvements I made to my lifestyle โ€” being an author, I’m already used to living indoors… and yet, our current world has forced me to make some changes in order for me to stay healthy, fit, but also productive creatively.

I’d been thinking about sharing my tips and tricks for several weeks now, but wasn’t sure whether I should; I had already seen many similar posts pop up all over the internet, and wasn’t entirely convinced that I could add something new to that.

However, I decided to run a poll in my Instagram story to ask you, my readers, this very question โ€” and, well, after I got a 100% “yes” from several votes, I figured there are people interested out there after all ๐Ÿ˜‰

So โ€” are you ready? In this post I’m going to talk about schedules (nothing neurotic, promise), at home workouts, things that can motivate you and improve your mood, AND, especially, how to maintain a high-productivity.

Let’s go! โค๏ธ

โ€ข Indoors High-productivity TIP #1: Schedule your day

To be honest, this is still pretty new to me. Usually Iโ€™m not one for living by schedules. I think it actually sounds rather neurotic. AND YET. Because I wanted to keep my productivity high while writing one book and editing another one simultaneously, I decided to give it a try.

Turns out I’m loving it! Besides all-things-bookish, I have also started scheduling my at home workouts. I used to go out for runs and walks (mostly in the mornings), but ever since I canโ€™t anymore, I caught myself slacking off a bit. I still did my indoor workouts in the evenings (I already did those before all this), but my โ€œdaylight trainingโ€ (for a lack of a better description) was kind of non-existentโ€ฆ and I didnโ€™t like that, because my health is important to me, and I actually LOVE working out.

On top of that, I always notice that working out regularly not only makes me stronger physically but mentally as well; it makes me feel fit and alert and focused, which increases my productivity in, yes, writing! (Or any other [creative] profession or hobby you do)

To give you an idea, here’s how such a schedule looks like for, let’s say, a Monday:

โ€ข MORNING

โ€” house chores

โ€” edit 15 pages of manuscript

โ€” BREAK: social media check/replying to messages/post something new

โ€” edit 15 pages of manuscript

โ€ข AFTERNOON

โ€” write on new manuscript

โ€ข EVENING

โ€” make dinner

โ€” 15 minute meditation

And here’s a random Tuesday’s:

โ€ข MORNING

โ€” edit 15 pages of manuscript

โ€” WORKOUT: 30 minute HIIT

โ€” edit 15 pages of manuscript

โ€” write blog post

โ€ข AFTERNOON

โ€” write on new manuscript

โ€ข EVENING

โ€” WORKOUT: 50 minute cardio kickboxing + strength training

Every day is different, so it’s okay to mix it up a bit and make different schedules for each and every day of the week. As you can see, however, I tend to do my editing in the mornings and my writing in the afternoons. This is because A) I’m more focused earlier in the day, and B) writing is more fun for me, so I have something to look forward to later that day ๐Ÿ˜‰

โ€ข Indoors High-productivity TIP #1.5: Making a schedule

The first thing you need to figure out is what you want to get done that day. Be realistic, though โ€” don’t plan too much, or you’ll only put yourself under an immense amount of pressure that won’t make you or anyone around you happy.

Try to estimate how much time you need for a certain task. An hour? Several? The entire morning or afternoon?

Once you’ve figured that out, try dividing it into three parts; morning, afternoon, and evening. Of course, you could also consider making some kind of time table โ€” for me, however, that’s a little bit too much. I don’t mind putting some pressure on myself (in fact, that only stimulates me to work harder and get more results in a short amount of time), but to feel like I’m racing against time and having to keep an eye on the clock while working, isn’t really the most relaxed atmosphere to me. BUT: in the end, it’s all up to you as an individual. Find what works best for you โค๏ธ

It’s better to schedule too little for your day rather than too much; that way, you get to have this feeling of accomplishment because you’re able to check off all of those boxes, and maybe even get some extra work done. That feels a whole lot better than ending up with unchecked boxes and feeling like you haven’t done enough, right?

img_1733

โ€ข Indoors High-productivity TIP #2: Keep your energy level high โ€” at home workouts

I love writing. I also love to write A LOT โ€” as much as I can each and every day. I love being able to finish not one, not two, but even three chapters a day. It helps me stay in my story’s flow and it keeps the creative process fun.

In order to keep that up, however, I’ve found out some time ago that you need to do some things to keep your energy level high. One of those things is being fit yourself. I’m not saying you need to be some kind of athlete, but science has proven multiple times that exercise helps reducing stress. And what does stress do for you? Absolutely nothing, except making you feel like crap and low on energy.

To get a good workout you don’t need to go to a gym and be surrounded by dozens of sweaty, red-faced people (during these times that’s a bit of a horror scenario, isn’t it?). Actually, you don’t even need to go outside.

Really, you can do it all at home. Don’t worry if you don’t have any fancy equipment; cardio and body-weight workouts, for example, don’t require any equipment at all.

My go-to YouTube channel for this is FitnessBlender. I am a HUGE fan of this channel. It’s run by the couple Kelli and Daniel, and I believe they have 600+ different workouts, as well as warming up and cool down exercises. During the videos, they give many tips for each and every exercise, explaining what to do, and what NOT to do to prevent injury.

One of my favorite no-equipment workouts is most certainly this one:

I know, this is a rather intense workout โ€” but no fear! If you’re not used to working out or just don’t feel like jumping around the room for 50 minutes, there are also some neat low impact workouts out there.

This is a fun one and a great workout (you don’t need to bounce around to get some decent exercise; this works just as well):

If, for whatever reason, you absolutely HATE fitness workouts, there’s always yoga to consider! It’s another great way to stay healthy and keep the energy flowing โ€” I actually love using it as a mid-morning break in between editing manuscripts.

My all-time favorite yoga YouTube channel is most definitely Yoga With Adriene:

This is a video I especially love โ€” it’s called “detox flow”, but it’s actually not just a detox for the body, but for the mind as well. When I feel like too many thoughts and ideas are crowding my head, this is my go-to video ๐Ÿ™‚

Or have you ever considered pilates? (Which is my latest fascination):

Or perhaps tai chi?

โ€ข Indoors High-productivity TIP #3: Healthy mind; happy mind

Even if you’re living indoors where there’s little influence from the outside world and even if you don’t have a lot of contact with other people, sometimes your mind can still take a wrong turn and drag you down a road of darkness filled with hungry demons eagerly waiting to tear your heart out.

Okay, so maybe that sounds a bit dramatic, but it CAN feel like that. We all know mood swings. We all know depression, even if it’s only a tiny little bit. The advice you normally get whenever that hits you, is to go outside; take a walk; breathe in some fresh air.

But what if you can’t go outside?

Well, I believe meditation can be a solution โ€” sometimes all you need is to be still for a bit, to reorganize your thoughts, open the drains and let the dirt out, and do some breathing exercises.

Meditation is also great when you’re feeling happy and you’re in a good place, of course! Personally, I’m doing absolutely awesome lately, yet I still like to practice meditation from time to time because I like the sense of calmness it gives me (especially because my brain has gone into overdrive and I have too many new book ideas floating around).

I gotta be honest, I’ve just started doing meditation a bit more seriously since this year, and that’s why I really like guided meditations โ€” you know, in which you’re reminded to not let your brain go monkey-mind on you while you’re actually supposed to empty it.

For that, I turn to Yoga With Adriene once more! This is a video I quite like (it’s a recent one, actually):

Other ways I sometimes use to clear my mind is to simply listen to some music (can be anything), read a book, play a video game, draw something. You just need to find what works best for you at that moment, until you’re feeling grounded and balanced again.

img_1848

โ€ข Indoors High-productivity TIP #4: Stay motivated; remember WHY

This, of course, is an important one.

To me writing is my absolute passion, so I actually don’t need much to stay motivated and keep on doing it โ€” the fresh ideas my mind comes up with constantly are doing a fine job. Next to that, I don’t find it too difficult to stay motivated for my workout routines, because I enjoy them.

I guess that’s the trick to staying motivated for whatever it is you’re doing: simply loving it.

Of course, other people can help inspire you. To me, there are many people in this world who inspire me on a daily basis. One of them, again, is Yoga With Adriene. (I swear I’ve not been hired to advertise her, lol.) The reason she inspires me, however, is her honest, positive attitude; she practically seems to exude happiness, and I guess that’s why she’s so popular. Everyone likes and is attracted to positivity โ€” negativity only drags you down. Her way of living has inspired me and reminds me often to see the good in things, even in the bad, and to be grateful for everything I have rather than be frustrated with the things I don’t have (yet).

This is just one example โ€” there are many more people who I find an inspiration, like some of my fellow indie authors who have published over a 100 books, have an amazing fanbase, and make other people happy with their stories on a daily basis. Seeing and reading about those things motivate me immensely;ย it literally sends my heart racing, and gives me a boost and the courage to chase my dreams as an author.

However… while others can inspire you, the BEST way to stay truly motivated for whatever you’re working on every single day (while at home and indoors), I believe that your true motivation and inspiration has to come from yourself.

Huh, what?

Yes.

All you have to do is remember WHY.

Why are you doing this? Why have you begun working toward your goal? Why have you decided to start chasing your dreams?

That answer alone should be enough to keep your fire burning โ€” and stay productive ๐Ÿ˜‰

โ€ข Indoors High-productivity TIP #5: Give yourself a break

We’ve reached the final tip, which is going to be a very short, very simple one:

While being indoors all (or at least most of) the time, it can be very tempting to keep going constantly. To keep up the productivity. To not stop working, because home is where the work is happening, and you have to keep on goingโ€”

Well, yeah, to achieve your goals, working hard is important. But to keep up your productivity and to stay healthy โ€” physically and mentally โ€” sometimes you need to give yourself a break.

Some days you have to tell your schedules to go to hell. Some days you have to allow yourself to slump down on the couch and read a book, play a video game, or watch a movie or series.

And that’s okay.

It took me a while to realize this. The first few years of my author-life I kept on going 24/7, and felt bad and even guilty whenever I took a bit of time off, feeling like I wasn’t doing enough to achieve my goals, like I was wasting my time. That’s why I even had a hard time doing regular workouts, because as long as something didn’t have anything to do with my writing, it felt like a waste of time.

The thing is, though โ€” it isn’t.

Because you only live this life once and you’re allowed to have fun with things that don’t have anything to do with your passions or dreams. Because working out doesn’t merely make me stronger physically, but mentally as well, which also makes me a better writer, because it makes my mind clear, which helps me work faster.

Give yourself a break sometimes. Allow yourself some rest. You’re not a machine โ€” no matter how productive you wish to be, you’re still just a person, and some days you’ll feel better or stronger than others. And that’s totally cool ๐Ÿ™‚

All right! With this, we have reached this very lengthy blog post, in which I’ve explained my top 5 tips and tricks for a high-productivity-healthy-indoors-lifestyle.

Of course, everyone is different. What works well for me, might not work at all for you. Still, I hope you may be able to get something out of my tips, or at least got inspired to improve your own way of living.

Or perhaps it’s already totally awesome and you don’t need to change a thing. In that case โ€” keep it up! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I hope you guys enjoyed reading this! Tell me, have some of my tips inspired you? Or do you have a trick of your own that works well? Feel free to leave a message! Red heart Also, if you think a friend might benefit from this post, please share~!

BE CREEPY. STAY FREAKY.

โ€” Lynn

PS. Just to be clear โ€” although I stated that you don’t even need to go outdoors to get some healthy exercise done, I didn’t mean that you shouldn’t ever go outside. After all, in normal circumstances, being outdoors is good for your health as we all need sunlight and vitamins. So, as soon as it’s safe to venture out again… please do ๐Ÿ˜‰

MARCH 2020 Writing Update: Writing & Craziness

MARCH 2020 Writing Update: Writing & Craziness

Hey there, Sleepwalkers!

Whoa. March. Well. What can I say? This sure has been a crazy month โ€” and I tend to say this about many months, because, well, let’s face it, I write crazy stories and am a bit of a crazy person myself, giving myself tons of deadlines to reach so I can write as much as possible each year.

But this month took “crazy” to a whole new level: countries are in lockdown, everyone is in (preventive) quarantine, the streets are mostly empty, and people have developed a sudden obsession with toilet paper (seriously, what’s that about?).

Everything feels so… surreal. Like this is actually a really crappy script of a really crappy movie, and we all somehow got stuck with a part in it.

However โ€” apart from all this, life still goes on, and as an author I’m lucky to be working from home anyway, which means not much has changed for me (except for the fact that I have developed a bit of a phobia from going outside, but oh well). So let’s focus on the fun things I did this month, yeah? Let’s get this writing update started!

2000_MU_TheInsomniaFiles_RED

โ€ข Editing: The Insomnia Files

Well, okay, perhaps this isn’t the most exciting thing I’ve done in March, since editing is actually the slowest, least interesting part of the writing process (in my opinion), yet it’s important and has to be done!

So, my team and I have been editing the short stories included in The Insomnia Files (Insomnia Saga #1.5) this month, since the book’s release on April 7th is rapidly coming closer! The thing I absolutely love about editing, though, is the way I get to see my manuscripts getting better and better with each round of revisions. It always makes me feel like I’m polishing this rough stone until in the end, I’m holding this shimmering jewel in my hands โ€” something to feel good about, a manuscript that is ready to become an actual book, after all the quirky sentences and typos have been smoothed out into something ready to be read by others.

And that’s pretty cool ?

โ€ข The Insomnia Files publication update

I posted this last week, but for those who may have missed it: concerning the world’s current… situation, so to speak, I have decided to postpone the paperback release of The Insomnia Files; the eBook, however, will still be released worldwide on April 7th!

To read my lengthy explanation of why I made this decision, please check out this post ๐Ÿ™‚

And if you want to know more about The Insomnia Files (Insomnia Saga #1.5) and which short stories this collection includes, visit the official Insomnia Saga page!

img_1733

โ€ข Writing: The Nocturne Files

At the end of 2019 I finished writing NOCTURNE, the second full-length installment to the Insomnia Saga and so the direct sequel to INSOMNIA โ€” so my latest project to write for the Insomnia Saga was The Nocturne Files, book #2.5 in the series.

I started working on this project in February, and finished it in the second week of March! I can’t say too much about this, because NOCTURNE isn’t even published yet and I don’t want to give away any spoilers โ€” what I can say is that The Nocturne Files (#2.5) have a connection to the third and last story of The Insomnia Files (#1.5) of Alain Somnus, which means that I dove even deeper into the Insomnia Saga’s history.

The Nocturne Files contains two stories, one novella and one short story, and I think it’s safe to say that these in-between story collections will become a bit of a sub-series within the Insomnia Saga, in which I tell about the history of the very first Summoners and the arrival of the Nightprowlers in great detail.

All right, I guess this all sounds pretty vague to you guys for now, but I promise things will get clearer once you’ve read The Insomnia Files ๐Ÿ˜‰ In any case, I’m very excited about The Nocturne Files and enjoyed writing it so much. It was another great experience!

And, after completing The Nocturne Files, I already finished my 3rd writing project of 2020! I’m feeling pretty awesome about that.

2000_MU_KissingMonsters

โ€ข Writing: KISSING SHADOWS

Wait, what? KISSING SHADOWS? But, you published a story last month called KISSING MONSTERS, right…?

Yep, that’s right! In last month’s writing update I already told you guys that I was brainstorming for a sequel to KISSING MONSTERS, but this month all of my ideas really started coming together and before I knew it, I had the entire story plotted out.

So, last week I decided to dive right in and write this story โ€” and, whoa; I loved working on this. I think I’ve actually fallen in love with the characters, the world, the atmosphere. Strangely enough, even though it’s filled with monsters, this is actually a rather relaxing project to work on. Perhaps because it’s less action-packed than the Insomnia Saga, and focusing more on romance.

Since it’s a shorter project, I already finished the manuscript last Sunday morning (I got up early especially to finish it; those who follow me on Instagram have probably seen that in my story!). So, that’s project #4 of 2020!

I’m on a roll.

โ€ข The KISSING MONSTERS series

Yeah, you read that right:

Although I’d originally planned to only write one sequel to KISSING MONSTERS, that thing that always happens to me happened again: my imagination got a bit over-active and before I knew it, the story began to grow, the characters started to develop, things became complex, and there you have it: a whole new series is born.

I’ve decided to add more sequels to KISSING MONSTERS and turn it into a series, consisting of short but sweet installments. They’ll all be around the length of the first book (though book two has already crossed the word count… ๐Ÿ˜€ ), and I’m planning to release all installments as eBooks for a nice 99 cents โ€” they’ll be quick reads to enjoy and finish within the night (or morning, or afternoon, or whenever it is you read)!

So, for now I’ll be working on two projects: the Insomnia Saga and Kissing Monsters ?

By the way, have you read KISSING MONSTERS yet? It’s available as a free eBook, in any format you like! If you’re a Kindle reader, you can find the .mobi format on Smashwords.

Find out more about KISSING MONSTERS here! ?

โ€ข Preparing to write ORIGINS

Oh yes, another thing I did in March: I made preparations for ORIGINS, the third full-length installment of the Insomnia Saga.

Throughout the months, I had taken lots and lots of notes (I swear, my notebooks scare me sometimes), and it has literally taken me hours to get them all organized in a Word document. After that, I’ve spent several days working on the plot-outline, and I’ve summarized the first 26 chapters of the book.

I plan to officially start working on ORIGINS in April! Really excited about that ๐Ÿ˜€ (And looking at everything that’s happening right now, it’ll be a great distraction.)

So… I suppose that’s it. I actually did even more this month than I thought! ๐Ÿ˜‰

This week I’m working hard on making The Insomnia Files publish-ready; the eBook is finished and uploaded to the publishers, and yesterday my designer and I worked on the paperback! It won’t be published yet, but at least we’ll have the files ready once I feel comfortable releasing it ๐Ÿ™‚ Today, however, we’re going into movie-mode to make some really cool teaser trailers! You can expect to see them on YouTube in April and May.

Well, everyone. What else can I say? These are strange times, and I know many of you are struggling. I must admit, I’m pretty anxious too, but I’ve decided to focus more on my writing โ€” because, you know, freaking out and panicking is not going to help anyone and certainly not going to change our current situation. I’m just trying to make the best of it. My family and I have placed ourselves in preventive quarantine, just to be extra safe, so I’m not going out anymore, not even for a run. To make up for it, I’m doing more indoor fitness and yoga workouts ?

What are you doing these days?

Wishing you all the best of health; be strong, be happy, be positive.

And don’t forgetโ€”

BE CREEPY. STAY FREAKY.

โ€” Lynn

Mad World | The Insomnia Files paperback release postponed

Mad World | The Insomnia Files paperback release postponed

Hello everyone,

It’s a mad world out there, isn’t it?

Schools and universities have been closed, people who can are supposed to work from home, and even restaurants, cinemas and other shops and places had to close their doors. Barely anyone uses public transportation, and the streets are eerily quiet.

Really, I had no idea the world could be this silent.

When I woke up this morning, all I heard was birdsong โ€” while I’m used to hearing people, mainly parents yelling at their kids to get a move on. This morning? Nothing.

It’s scary to think that a thing like a virus can shut down our world and lives like this… and meanwhile, nature doesn’t seem to care; the sky is blue, the sun is shining, the weather is lovely. And yet, I hardly dare stepping outside, because suddenly the outside world seems menacing to me, every person you meet a hazard.

Like I said on social media last weekend, my Instagram, Twitter and Facebook feeds are filled with anxiety, people panicking, and others arguing whether we’re overreacting or not. I myself am a rather cautious person, so I must admit I feel a sense of anxiety as well โ€” and while I’ve always been a bit of a hermit, it’s even worse now. I’m staying indoors as much as possible, and don’t even risk going out for a run. I did last week, though, but the atmosphere was strange; everyone was watching the other, and I got the sense everyone just wanted to get indoors as soon as possible. Myself included, to be honest! ๐Ÿ˜‰

And on that note…

2000_MU_TheInsomniaFiles

โ€ข The Insomnia Files paperback release postponed

Some might think I’m overreacting and that this precaution isn’t necessary, but I’ve made my decision anyway: on April 7th the short story collection The Insomnia Files (Insomnia Saga 1.5) would be released in both paperback and eBook edition, but I have decided to postpone the paperback release to later this year.

I publish my paperbacks with Amazon, and looking at the fact that my latest book, INSOMNIA, was first printed in Poland, then shipped to Germany, and then again shipped to the Netherlands to get it to me, I simply don’t feel comfortable placing any orders online for the time being.

>>> The eBook release of The Insomnia Files, however, will still be published on April 7th! <<<

I even thought of postponing the release entirely, but I read a Tweet last weekend in which someone said that the world needs creative people the most right now, and so I realized that publishing a new eBook would actually be a nice thing since everyone is mainly staying indoors these days ๐Ÿ™‚ (In any case, I know I am really enjoying reading and other indoors activities at the moment, now more than ever.)

So, if you really want to get your hands on The Insomnia Files paperback edition, I apologize for the delay in the release, but I believe you should do whatever you feel comfortable with, which is why I made this decision. As soon as things normalize again (and I really hope that’s sooner than later), I will publish the paperback ASAP โ€” however, the eBook will be available in any format you prefer in many online (book)stores ?

In anticipation to the release (which will be in 3 weeks!), I’ll be sharing sneak peeks of both Kay’s short story as well as Alain’s, which are both included in this collection! To find out more about The Insomnia Files, check out this page! (Third in list!)

โ€ข Stay well, stay safe

With this post I also wanted to check up on you guys; how are you doing, and how are you experiencing everything right now? I hope you’re well and in good health ๐Ÿ™‚

Stay well, stay safe.

(I even came up with a cool mantra for myself: KEEP CALM AND WRITE ON. Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?!)

Wishing you all the best of health โค๏ธ

INSOMNIA | Officially Publish-ready!

INSOMNIA | Officially Publish-ready!

This is just a quick in-between update concerning INSOMNIA‘s release next week! Normally I save these kinds of things for my monthly writing updates, but I felt like sharing a small peek behind the scenes with you guys today ๐Ÿ™‚

JAN'20_WritingUpdate

If you’ve read my January Writing Update, you know that my team of beta-readers and I were working hard last month to edit the manuscript of INSOMNIA for the final time. Then last week I sat down with my designer โ€” who honestly helps me with everything, concerning the eBook, the paperback (interior design and cover), my website, book trailers, you name it (yes, she’s bloody amazing, that one).

However, this morning we wrapped things up, which means that everything is ready for the official release of INSOMNIA!

Ever since 2020 has started, we’ve been working at this crazy, relentless pace, because so much had to be done before the 11th of February, which is the release day of INSOMNIA. I’ve also been working through weekends, editing, writing, scheduling things, but after finishing all of the work today, it looks like things are about to settle down a bit.

Well, “settle down”โ€”there’s still much work to be done; of course, INSOMNIA releases next week, and I even have another small release planned for Valentine’s Day (more info coming soon!), which means posting blog posts, sharing promotional ads on social media, and lots of other small things. Also, there are even more releases planned for the nearby future and I already have the release dates, so there is much I need to share with you all ๐Ÿ™‚

What can you expect the following weeks?

โ€ข INSOMNIA release (eBook & paperback)

โ€ข a Valentine’s Day short story release (free eBook)

โ€ข INSOMNIA‘s official book trailer and several teasers (the book trailer will be up on YouTube next Tuesday, and the following weeks after I’ll be sharing some cool teasers! Stay tuned and subscribe here)

โ€ข The Insomnia Files and NOCTURNE release date announcements

โ€ข NOCTURNE cover reveal

โ€ข special INSOMNIA blog posts (short posts in which we’ll dive deeper into the Insomnia Saga universe, explaining about the Summoners, Light spells, Nightprowlers, the fictional city of Somnus, and my philosophy and inspiration behind the concepts)

I believe that’s about it! (what, is that all? :P) I don’t think 2020 is going to settle down at all, although I will be sailing some calmer waters after next week, when I’ll have the opportunity again to focus on editing manuscripts and writing new projects; I’m looking forward to it!

BEHIND THE SCENES SEP 2018 - Brainstorming

It kind of feels anticlimactic now that all the work has been done, which is actually the main reason I wrote this update; it just felt good to write it all down, to create an overview of all the things my team and I have done and I’m about to do during the next couple of months ? I feel tired as well as excited!

It’s only February, but already 2020 feels like an awesome year to me, especially creative-wise, and the entire year is filled with releases and other things I’m already looking forward to. Gotta love the positive vibes โญ๏ธ

All right, guys, this is it! Are you also looking forward to the release of INSOMNIA? And what cool things have you been doing the last few weeks? Tell me!

BE CREEPY. STAY FREAKY.

JANUARY 2020 Writing Update: INSOMNIA publish-ready + writing ALAIN SOMNUS + dancing demons

JANUARY 2020 Writing Update: INSOMNIA publish-ready + writing ALAIN SOMNUS + dancing demons

I always thought that January was supposed to be this long, boring month that never wanted to end.

Well. Guess I’m wrong there.

This month flew right by for me, but perhaps that’s merely because I’ve just been incredibly busy! And on that note, let’s dive into this update and look back at all I’ve been working on โ€” oh, and dreaming about. Spoiler alert: I had a batshit-crazy dream this month. Stay tuned ๐Ÿ˜›

โ€ข INSOMNIA: final round of edits, now publish-ready!

The first few weeks of January my team of beta-readers and I tackled the manuscript of INSOMNIA (Insomnia Saga book 1) for the final time, to polish it into the very best version!

This final round always feels the most important to me, and it’s actually rather exhausting to read, read, read, reread, utterly analyze each and every sentence… But, knowing that I was nearly there and that the book was almost publish-ready, made the work absolutely worth it and still fun ?

I finished editing the manuscript last week, took a weekend off โ€” and since last Monday my awesome designer/partner-in-everything-bookish and I have started working on turning it into an actual book! The eBook is already finished, the file has been uploaded to the publishers, and yesterday we started working on the print-edition. I absolutely love this process, so I’m really excited ๐Ÿ˜€ I just can’t wait to hold the paperback of INSOMNIA in my hands, you know? (Though I can tell you the eBook edition already feels pretty good.)

โ€ข Writing: ALAIN SOMNUS

Besides working on the manuscript of INSOMNIA, I’ve also done some writing.

This month I have written a third story for The Insomnia Files โ€” to be exact, File #3: ALAIN SOMNUS. Without giving away any spoilers, this tells the story of the very first Summoner who started fighting the Nightprowlers. It’s really interesting to dive into the Insomnia Saga‘s history like this, and I can’t wait to have this published, so you guys can read it ๐Ÿ˜‰ (But… one step at a time.)

After a week and a half, I finished writing this story, and with that, I have finished my very first writing project of 2020! It feels really good, and I have many more plans, so I can’t wait to see how many more projects I’ll finish this year ๐Ÿ™‚

The Insomnia Files is a short story collection that will accompany INSOMNIA, containing three stories (File #1: JODI COLLINS, File #2: KAY SOMNUS, and File #3: ALAIN SOMNUS). Its publication is expected for April 2020.

Also…:

In case you’ve missed it, or you’re a new reader โ€” did you know that the first short story, JODI COLLINS, is available as a free eBook? It’s especially written for first-time Insomnia Saga readers, and introduces the main character, Jodi, as well as the world of Summoners and Nightprowlers. The eBook also includes a sneak peek of INSOMNIA!

You can find your preferred download link on this page.

โ€ข INSOMNIA: cover update reveal

I also shared this last week in a blog post, but I’d like to highlight it again: the cover for INSOMNIA has had an update!

After seeing the final design of the cover for book 2, NOCTURNE (I will share it with you guys ASAP, but I can already tell you it looks freakin’ gorgeous), my designer and I decided that the first cover needed a bit of a boost; so, she recreated the cover and made a beautiful, colorful yet dark version of it!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I’m incredibly happy with this; it makes the international release of this book feel even more “fresh”, in a way ๐Ÿ˜€

โ€ข Inspiring dreams: Dancing Demons!

Maybe my mind is simply too busy. Maybe I’ve been writing too many freaky stories about too many monsters.

Whatever the reason, this month I had the strangest dream that involved me having to clear several levels (kind of in video game fashion!), and having to avoid some kind of monster on each of them; I even encountered actual dancing demons.

It was crazy, but the thing was, once I woke up, I could remember everything so clearly. The dream had much more detail than I just described above, but I’m not going to tell you everything yet, because this dream has seriously inspired me for a story โ€” and hey, I don’t want to give away too many spoilers ๐Ÿ˜›

Anyway, I figured it must work nicely for a stand-alone novella, and I’ve already been writing down some ideas. I can’t possibly say when you guys will ever get to read it, but… I’m just surprised that an actual dream has been able to inspire me like this. Trust me โ€” this doesn’t happen often, for most of my dreams are just weird, random, and well, completely useless for my writing ๐Ÿ˜‰

Wish I had more dreams like those. (Not that I’m short on ideas. To be honest, my mind is crowded with them โ€” and so are my notebooks, lol.)

Well, I suppose this wraps up this month quiet nicely โ€” I’ve been at work for merely a few weeks since my Christmas break, but I already feel like I’ve been working for months. I’m enjoying it, though โ€” being busy, finishing projects, starting new ones, working on promotion, it’s all pretty dynamic ๐Ÿ˜€ It gives me lots of energy, and I can’t wait to start on February!

What’s in store for next month?: I’ll be working on The Nocturne Files, another Insomnia Saga short story collection which will be published after the release of NOCTURNE, I’ll be editing The Insomnia Files (lots of files in this sentence… are you keeping up?), and, perhaps most importantly โ€” I’ll be releasing INSOMNIA, the Insomnia Saga‘s first full-length installment!

ALSO… there will be another release in Februaryโ€”a surprise release for Valentine’s Day; a Dark YAFantasy Romance short story that will be available as a free eBook!

What? Really? YES!

Stay tuned, dear Sleepwalkers.

This is going to be awesome ?

Hope you all had a wonderful month as well, perhaps filled with dreams and monsters?

It’s 2020: A battle of Light and Night

It’s 2020: A battle of Light and Night

First of all…

HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE!

Here we are, the first of January; the very first day of 2020.

Let’s take a deep breath. Because, I mean, this actually is a pretty special day, right? Yeah, okay, every new day can mean a brand new start; every single day you can decide to do something you’ve never done before or always wanted to do. You don’t need an actual “new year” to do that.

And yet, I can’t help but feel excited about the fact that it is now officially 2020, because I have some really cool plans for this yearโ€”and today, I’d like to tell you guys a little bit about them ๐Ÿ™‚

2000_MU_Insomnia

โ€ข First release: INSOMNIA (Insomnia Saga #1)

My very first release this year will be INSOMNIA, the first official installment of the Insomnia Saga.

I’ve been working on this project since the summer of 2017, so I’m really excited that the series finally is going to get an official “lift off”, so to speak, and that I can share this dark story of mine with all of you. I feel like INSOMNIA is going to be a great first release to start this year withโ€”for me, anyway. I just love this story and my characters to pieces, and I hope you guys will too!

INSOMNIA will be released on February 11th 2020

If you’re curious, you can download the prequel short story JODI COLLINS for free, an eBook that also includes a sneak peek of the first few chapters of INSOMNIA!

INSOMNIA is available for pre-order worldwide (eBook only) on Amazon, Kobo, Barnes & Noble and Smashwords. Check it out!

On the day of release, INSOMNIA will also be available in paperback edition!

โ€ข More INSOMNIA SAGA releases on the way…

This year I’ll be focusing entirely on the Insomnia Saga, which means there are many more releases on the way! I can’t give actual dates yet, but to give you an idea of what you’ll be able to expect…:

โ€” The Insomnia Files, a collection of short stories accompanying INSOMNIA, will be released April 2020 (both eBook and paperback edition)

โ€” NOCTURNE, the second installment of the Insomnia Saga, is planned for a June 2020 release (both eBook and paperback edition)

โ€” The Nocturne Files, a collection of short stories accompanyingย  NOCTURNE, is expected September 2020 (both eBook and paperback edition)

โ€” ORIGINS, the third installment of the Insomnia Saga, will be published December 2020 (both eBook and paperback edition)

I’m incredibly excited about all this, and I hope you guys will be with me during this journey through the Insomnia Saga universe ๐Ÿ™‚ There will also be a fourth installment to the series, entitled SOMNUS, which will be released in 2021 โ€” but hey, let’s focus on 2020 first, yeah? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Will you be fighting alongside Jodi and Kay in their battle of Light and Night?

Well, in short, this is what 2020 is going to look like for me. In January I’ll be working on both The Insomnia Files and The Nocturne Files, and I expect to start on ORIGINS in February! I can’t wait ๐Ÿ˜€

I hope you guys all have a wonderful, productive,ย andย fun year as well. Sure, every year will be filled with ups and downs, but let’s focus on the ups instead โ€” negative vibes won’t serve you after all; it’ll only attract more negativity. Or should I say darkness? To use some Insomnia Saga lingo โ€” summon your Light, your Inner Strength, and hold on to it; use it to fight the shadows.

Let’s all work hard to make our dreams come true ๐Ÿ™‚

BE CREEPY. STAY FREAKY.

Looking Back at 2019

Looking Back at 2019

We did it.

We have reached the last days of December โ€” and so, the last days of 2019. Can you believe it? This year just seemed to fly right by, and yet, I have done A LOT these past twelve months.

At the end of each year, I always like to look back at all the highlights and reflect on that.

Let’s journey back through 2019 together:

โ€ข January: Writing Books and Snowy Walks

At the beginning of this year I was still working on my last Dutch novel, which was Schimmenstof (translation: Phantom Dust), the sixth and final installment of the Schimmenwereld Serie (Phantom World series). After taking a Christmas-break off working on this manuscript, I was SO ready to tackle this project again once it was January.

Working on the last book of a series always is an emotional experience. The project was pretty heavy to work on, but I absolutely loved every moment of it (luckily I’m what you call a “plotter”, which means I first write a detailed plot outline for my books before I even start writing; this way, for me, the actual writing process is a very smooth and fun experience).

January was a cold month, and we even had some snowโ€”so, besides writing like a madwoman, I often went outside with my camera ๐Ÿ˜€ I still have a couple of photos!:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

โ€ข February: Working Hard & Taking It Easy

In February I finished writing Schimmenstof (Phantom Dust).

It felt amazing.

Though I must also admit that besides feeling happy and euphoric and, well, pretty d*mn proud, I also felt sad that I finished the series. Writing so many books about your characters really is a special experience, and especially when you’re about to say goodbye to them, you realize how much you’ve come to care about them. I know they’re just fictional figures, figments of my imagination… and yet ๐Ÿ˜‰

I decided to take a break off from writing during the last week of February โ€” and while it had been snowy and cold in January, spring came early during the second half of February! I also took some photos back then:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

โ€ข March: Rewriting INSOMNIA + shortlisted for The Indie Awards

This month I could finally start writing in English full time โ€” and so I worked on the new version of INSOMNIA, and even finished it! I was so hyped about my projects; I was practically unstoppable ๐Ÿ˜‰

Meanwhile, other exciting things were happening โ€” to my utter surprise, I received an email from The (Dutch) Indie Awards, telling me that my book Schimmendroom (Phantom Dream, the fourth installment of the Schimmenwereld Serie/Phantom World series) had been chosen by the jury as one of the finalists in the category “Best Book of 2018”!

Juryprijs Beste Boek 2018

There it is, on the right!

I actually had a hard time believing it, but it was all over social media โ€” and I was invited to come to the award ceremony in April…

โ€ข April: I did some editing, some writing… oh, and I won an award. (say what?)

In April I started the editing process for Schimmenstof (Phantom Dust); the release was planned for July, so it was time to start working toward that goal!

Deciding to take a break from the Insomnia Saga, I started working on another project behind the scenes (one I still can’t talk too much about, because it’ll take at least a year before it’ll be published; sorry!). What I can tell is that it’s another series, and that I finished writing the first installment.

I also announced the release date for Schimmenstof (Phantom Dust), and officially revealed the cover! I love cover reveals, but this one was, well, “extra special” to me, for it was the final book of my series.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I was also supposed to attend the award ceremony of The Indie Awards. It took place on a Saturday.

On Friday, however, I didn’t feel very well; headache, dizziness, aching muscles, runny nose, you know it: THE FLU. The next day I still didn’t feel any better, so I couldn’t go the the ceremony. I was pretty bummed. Sunday morning, however, I found that I had recovered a bit, so I decided to watch the video of the awards ceremony.

At the end of the video, they announced the winner of the “Best Book of 2018” award… and my jaw nearly dropped to the floor when they called out “Lynn Robin!”.

SERIOUSLY. I couldn’t believe it. My first response was: HUH? (yeah, being a writer, you can see that I’m very well-spoken)

Thinking back on this, I actually still feel pretty amazed and dazed, even, because it’s such a crazy thing! It’s one of those things that always happen to other people, not me. Those things you secretly fantasize about, but really don’t expect to happen for real. It really was an amazing experience! ๐Ÿ˜€

I was disappointed (still am a bit) that I couldn’t be there, but well. Flu happens. Right?

โ€ข May: Working on my top secret project & Editing some more

After all the craziness of the past month(s), May was much more relaxed, giving me time to write and edit in peace (lol).

The editing process for Schimmenstof (Phantom Dust) continued. I got the notes back from my Editing Ninjas, worked through them, and then started editing again by the end of the month.

Meanwhile, I also continued working on my top secret project, by starting book 2!

โ€ข June: My award, publishing/release preparations… and exhaustion

June was UTTER MADNESS.

I finished writing the second installment of my secret project.

I also finished the editing process for Schimmenstof (Phantom Dust), and then my team and I worked on turning it into an actual book, both print and eBook edition. We also made a trailer! If you’d like, you can watch it here:

The excitement of June didn’t stop though, because I also got my award sent to me through the mail! It was such a surreal feeling to finally be able to hold it in my hands, yet I think it was at that moment that it truly dawned on me that I really won this.

I took some photos to share:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

By the end of June I was completely exhausted. But still, I couldn’t wait for the release of Schimmenstof (Phantom Dust) in July…

Bookpage_Schimmenstof

โ€ข July: Release Schimmenstof + Summer holiday

On the 16th of July, Schimmenstof (Phantom Dust) was officially released! And it was a true celebration, because the book had already received a several reviews from book bloggers by that time, and all of them were absolutely wonderful and completely blew me away. My book got the best reviews I could wish forโ€”and hey, what more could you want?

The rest of July I decided to just enjoy the summer, and allowed myself to be lazy. I read books, went outside to lounge in the grass (and read books), I played video games, I visited a museum… and, all right, maybe I’m not really good at being lazy, because I soon started to write the plot outlines for two Insomnia Saga short stories, and already wrote a huge chunk of the first one ๐Ÿ™‚

โ€ข August: Extending the summer holiday… and writing some more

I took it easy in August as well, though my urge to write grew stronger with each week, and soon I had finished both short stories and was already busy writing down notes for other projects!

โ€ข September: Back to business + Writing NOCTURNE

In September it was time to really get back to work, so I edited my INSOMNIA manuscript and sent it to my team, and then started writing NOCTURNE, the second installment of the Insomnia Saga.

I wrote the first 100 pages in a couple of weeks and I really liked where it was going, and yet, something was off…

At the end of the month, after talking it over with my team, I realized what the issue was: the first book simply missed something, something that would help it connect better to the second book that somehow felt more “mature”.

After that talk I got really excited, and soon my head was overflowing with ideas of things I wanted to change and add to the manuscript…

โ€ข October: Rewriting INSOMNIA

Yep, I wrote the whole freakin’ manuscript all over again.

I’d given myself the entire month to do it (so I wouldn’t get behind schedule too much), and I practically wrote until my brain was toast. I was done after three weeks though, and used the last week for a rough editing round.

After the first week of rewriting, however, I’d already sent the first part of my manuscript over to my team โ€” and they were so enthusiastic, it just blew me away ๐Ÿ˜€ It really encouraged me to go on, so I guess that actually helped speed up the writing process.

To be honest, I don’t remember much else of October. It was kind of a blur, really.

โ€ข November: Back to NOCTURNE + Updating the site: Going English! + December release preparations

Once it was November, I was glad to get back to work on NOCTURNE, and wrote about the next 150 pages.

Meanwhile, though, I also had other things to do… such as updating my site (it was still Dutch). That was really cool, and I felt good after it was all done; it truly felt like a new beginning ๐Ÿ˜€ I also shared a blog post, in which I introduced myself; you can read it here.

Also, it was time to do some preparations for my December release, an Insomnia Saga short story (the one I wrote back in July/August!). My team helped me make the eBook, and even a book trailer! Check it out!:

I love new releases, whether they’re full books, a novella, or just a short story. It’s just awesome to share something new with the world โ€” it’s what I love most about writing professionally ๐Ÿ™‚

2000_MU_InsomniaFile_Jodi

โ€ข December: Release JODI COLLINS + Finishing NOCTURNE + Christmas!

And so, it became December. The last month of 2019.

I worked hard; it was awesome.

On December 10th, I released my very first international publication: The Insomnia Files, File #1: JODI COLLINS. A free eBook, a prequel to my upcoming series, a short story especially written for first-time Insomnia Saga readers, telling the background story of the series’ main protagonist, Jodi Collins.

I’m still really excited about this release, and I hope people have been/are/will read and enjoy it, and that you’re looking forward to the release of INSOMNIA early 2020!

img_1438img_1439

Besides publishing this short story, however, I also worked hard on writing NOCTURNE… and even managed to finish it! To be honest, looking at how busy I’d been, I never expected I would be able to finish this project before Christmas, but somehow I did! It was such a wonderful feeling to write down those last words; it really was a nice wrap-up of the year ๐Ÿ˜‰

And here we are, at the end of 2019.

Like I said, this year has just flown right by โ€” and yet, to me it really feels like an actual year has passed; I have done so many things this year, wrote so many manuscripts (6, if I’m counting it right), and also learned a lot.

As I said at the beginning of this post, I always like to reflect back on the past twelve months at the end of each year, because it’s just really cool to create an overview of all the things I’ve done, but also to see what I’d like to change or improve in the next year. And not just things concerning writing, but concerning myself as well.

I think the lesson I learned this year is that it’s important to be patient, and to realize that you can’t force things. I think it’s safe to say that I’m pretty enthusiastic and passionate, especially regarding my writing, and so sometimes I pressure myself a bit too much in wanting to reach certain goals in a certain amount of time โ€” also things I actually don’t really have any control over.

So the advice I’m giving myself for 2020 is to simply stop trying to control things, and to accept things as they are. As long as I keep working hard, as long as I stay positive, things will work out. And hey, come on, I’ve got nothing to complain about. 2019 has been EPIC โ€” and 2020 is going to be a great year, filled with new book releases and adventures I can’t wait to share with you guys! ๐Ÿ˜€

Are you excited for 2020?

Thank you for reading my post! I’ll be posting a really cool one on January 1st, in which I’m going to tell you guys a bit more about my upcoming releases of 2020!

DECEMBER 2019 Writing Update: releasing JODI COLLINS, finishing NOCTURNE, and merry Christmas

DECEMBER 2019 Writing Update: releasing JODI COLLINS, finishing NOCTURNE, and merry Christmas

Dear Sleepwalkers,

It is time to say goodbye to December, and what a month it has been.

I don’t know about you guys, but every year, instead of slowing down, I tend to channel some extra “fuel” to power through the last month โ€” just to get all those last things done, just to do something extra, all so I can take a deep breath at the end and look back at the year feeling like I really accomplished something.

Well, this year has been the same… but am I happy will all that I’ve done this last month of the year? Read on!

โ€ข New release: The Insomnia Files, File #1: JODI COLLINS

This month I released my very first international publication โ€” a prequel especially written for first-time Insomnia Saga readers, a short story about the series’ main protagonist, Jodi Collins.

It was really exciting, for I’ve been looking forward to this for months, maybe even a year, and I already wrote this short story back in July, so it was awesome to finally see it turn into an actual eBook ๐Ÿ™‚

In case you’ve missed it โ€” The Insomnia Files, File #1: JODI COLLINS is available as a free eBook! You can find the download link you prefer and more information about the story right here.

Did you know that the story actually takes place on Christmas Eve? So, if you haven’t read it already, perhaps you should tonight! ๐Ÿ˜‰

โ€ข Editing: INSOMNIA

This month my team and I finished another round of editing INSOMNIA, the first book in the Insomnia Saga, which will be published February 11th 2020!

I’m really enjoying the editing process, but, to be honest, I don’t mind that we’re taking a few weeks off for now ๐Ÿ˜‰ We’ll be back for the last round in January, but during the holidays we’re taking it easy!

โ€ข Writing: the last chapters of NOCTURNE

If you’ve been following me on either this blog or social media, you probably haven’t missed the fact that I’ve been working on the second installment of the Insomnia Saga, NOCTURNE, ever since September.

Working on this book has been awesome, but like I said in my writing update back in November, it’s been a bit of a “bumpy ride”, since I couldn’t work on it full time. I rewrote the first book, INSOMNIA, halfway the writing process, gave my site a huge makeover and update, had to do some work for the publication of JODI COLLINS as well as the promotion of it, and I also had to edit the manuscript of INSOMNIA…

So, actually, I never expected to be able to finish NOCTURNE before the end of the year.

Yet, somehow, I did!

I’m not sure how I did it, to be honest โ€” but like I said on social media last week, when inspiration strikes, it strikes hard, and that somehow gave me this amazing writing-boost ๐Ÿ˜€ I wrote about 16 chapters in two weeks, and last Thursday I finished the project.

Finishing a novel always is the greatest feeling. I swear, it’s magic. And the same goes for finishing NOCTURNE, because really, this book was intense. It’s kind of hard to talk about itโ€”or not talk about itโ€”, since INSOMNIA hasn’t even been released yet, and I don’t want to give away any spoilers. However, I can safely say that I’ve learned a lot from writing this book, along with my characters who also learned some valuable lessons themselves, and despite the very dark, sinister themes of this book, I had loads of fun writing every single sentence ๐Ÿ˜‰

I already sent out a message on social media, but I just want to say it again: The last day writing this book has been especially fun thanks to all the encouraging messages I got from readers and fellow writers all over the world, while I was furiously typing away on my laptop; it was awesome to hear from you all! Thank you ๐Ÿ™‚

โ€ข Sit back and relax: it’s almost Christmas!

After all this hard work, I’ve decided to take a break for a couple of weeks, just to replenish my energy, read some books, play video games… well, to simply do all those fun and lazy things you sometimes just really need to do, right?

Also, tomorrow it’s Christmas! I want to wish you all a merry Christmas; I hope you have a lovely time, no matter however and with whoever you spend it.

With this, I’m going to end my last writing update of 2019.

Coming up next week however, is a blog post in which I’ll look back at this year and give an overview of all the things I’ve done, learned, and accomplished this last twelve months, and with the start of the new year I’ll also share a post in which I’m going to tell you about what bookish things you can expect from me in 2020 ๐Ÿ˜€ I hope to see you here on my blog!

But until then…

Have a happy Christmas. Sit back and relax. Read a book (may I suggest my Insomnia Saga short story? …VERY subtle, right?). Enjoy life. Celebrate winter. (Or take notes like a maniac for your next project, as I’ll probably be doing :P)

Feel free to leave a message; I love hearing from you!

NOVEMBER 2019 Writing Update: Insomnia Saga, changes, new horizons

NOVEMBER 2019 Writing Update: Insomnia Saga, changes, new horizons

Dear Sleepwalkers,

For two years I’ve been writing these monthly updates โ€” and to be honest, it feels rather strange to write my first one in English now ๐Ÿ˜‰

However, nothing has changed really; life’s been busy, as always, and this month has been a particularly exciting one. So without further ado, let me tell you about all the things I’ve been up to in November!

โ€ข Insomnia Saga writing: NOCTURNE

NOCTURNE is the second book in the Insomnia Saga series. I started working on this project back in September, but in October I had to take a break from it to do some crazy (but awesome; it was so much fun!) editing on the first book, INSOMNIA.

This month, however, I could finally return to my manuscript. The book is divided into six parts, and I finished writing part 3 last week. Then, however, I had some other work to do again, so I’ve been forced to take a break once more. Working on NOCTURNE is pretty challenging โ€” it’s not that the book is that hard to write (it flows nicely actually, and I’m absolutely loving the process), but I’ve got so many other writing-related things to do, that I simply don’t have the time to work on it full-time.

โ€ข From Dutch to English; updating the site

The reason why I had to stop writing last week, is that it was (finally!) time to update my site! I decided I wanted to debut internationally a full year ago โ€” it was October 2018, for those who’d like to know ๐Ÿ˜‰ โ€” and it kind of exhilarated as well as terrified me that the time had come at last to start working toward this goal.

Anyway, since you’re reading this you are already hereโ€”still, I’d like to welcome you one more time ๐Ÿ˜€

In case you missed it and you’d like to read a bit more about me, my books, and upcoming releases, I wrote and shared a blog post last week to introduce myself! You can read it here.

โ€ข Upcoming releases: Insomnia Saga

With the site-update, I also announced the upcoming Insomnia Saga releases!

December this year I’ll be releasing a prequel to INSOMNIA called The Insomnia Files: FILE #1: JODI COLLINS, which is a short story about the series’ heroine, Jodi Collins. It’ll be available as a FREE eBook download on December 10th!

Early 2020, INSOMNIA โ€” the first book of the Insomnia Saga โ€” will be released. INSOMNIA will be available in both print edition and eBook February 11th 2020.

โ€ข FILE #1: JODI COLLINS eBook + teaser trailer COMING SOON

This week I’m still too busy to write, because my team and I are working hard on the short story’s release next month; yesterday we finished making the eBook, and today we’ll be working on the teaser trailer, which will be on YouTube in a couple of weeks! I can’t wait to share it with you guys ๐Ÿ˜€

Well, I think it’s time to wrap this up. I expect December to be a bit… well, calmer, I suppose? I’mย  hoping that I’ll have some time to write on NOCTURNE. Actually, at the beginning of November, I even said at social media that it was my goal to finish writing the manuscript by the end of this month.

Guess I was a bit too enthusiastic there.

Right now, I’m not even sure whether I’ll be able to finish it before the end of this year, with the short story release, some editing I still have to do, AND the holidays! I’m so excited about Christmas! We’re going to decorate the house this Saturday, so consider me hyped! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I love Christmas. I know I write freaky stories about pretty dark stuff, but I just love this time of the year โ€” it’s so cozy and magical, isn’t it? Glistening things and tiny lights everywhere! What’s not to love?!

Are you looking forward to Christmas? And what do you like to read during this time of the year? Leave a message!

BE CREEPY. STAY FREAKY.
